Grown in Tasmania. Written for the World.

NEWS:

THANKS TO THE MANY READERS & WRITERS OF ISLAND who have expressed concern at the decision by Arts Tasmania to cease funding the magazine in 2012. Your warm support and good wishes have been deeply appreciated. The good news is that you can convert that support into a new subscription - as Island has secured funding to continue bringing you the best new writing from Australia and around the world in 2012.

Another very happy piece of news is that Island 126, 'Other Stories', is now on its way to bookshop shelves and your postbox. Our Spring 2011 issue was recently launched by the wonderful James Boyce at The Hobart Bookshop. You can read James' launch speech here - a passionate and eloquent argument for the importance of Island and its contribution to Australian literary culture.

As James' speech suggest, 126 is a corker - featuring fiction from 2011's The Australian/Vogel winner, Rohan Wilson; an interview with David Malouf; and a stunning photograph essay on Morocco by Jaka Babnik. 126 also includes new fiction from John Hughes; Mark Tredinnick in praise of the lyric essay; and Peter Shepherd, winner of the 2011 Wildcare Tasmania International Nature Writing Prize, on sharing a tent with white-capped noddies. The striking cover images come from Tasmanian artist, Amanda Davies.

Island 126 includes a host of online-only features: enter our online-only poetry special here; listen to Sarah Kanowski's conversation with David Malouf here; and hear James Boyce give an audio tour of his writing shack at Eggs and Bacon Bay here. You can also access a selction of work from the print issue, including Jaka Babnik's photographs of Morocco here.

Speaking of the best new poetry, the winners of the Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize were announced at the Island 126 launch by judge, Sarah Day. You can read the winning entries here, and co-judge John Kinsella will write about the decision not to award an overall winner this year in Island 127.

Our tech-savvy readers are invited to visit the Island Magazine: The Future, our social media campaign hub here. Watch for updates and have your say. You can also follow developments (and lots else about writing) on Island's twitter feed.

125, our special Mona issue, is now sold out in print copy - but you can purchase as an ePub for $9.95 from our online shop. Feel free to contact the Island office if you need help navigating the digital seas!
