Once upon a time, a brave coracle was launched. It was a vessel of strong and beautiful intent. Over the years, as it journeyed, it evolved into an ocean-going yacht, of Huon pine timbers and fine lines. It is now a vessel of resilience and elegance.
Mmm, the editor is indulging her penchant for metaphor again. And maybe, just this once, we should let her. Island has been publishing since 1979. That makes 2009 the year in which we celebrate our thirtieth birthday. The valiant coracle launched by an inspired group of Tasmanians back in 1979 has become an established feature of Australia’s literary landscape. It is now well-respected for its unwavering commitment to literary excellence and for upholding the tradition of providing quality publishing opportunities for writers, established and emerging.
No epic journey is travelled without the hard work of many. I pay tribute to the courageous people who began Island in 1979 as well as to the many hundreds of people who have contributed their words, cash, time and energy to the enterprise over the intervening years. Our recent fund-raising drive has revealed the amazing depth and continuing strength of Island’s support base. Bravo and thank you to all.
I have delighted in working with the six essayists featured in this celebratory issue. They are the winners of the 2009 Wildcare Tasmania Nature Writing prize (judged by Adrienne Eberhard and Dael Allison). Their essays range from the broken mouth of a Canadian river to the open beaks of vociferous Australian lorikeets. These essays represent a sample
of the finest nature writing being practised today and were selected from the largest pool of entries ever received in the competition’s history.
Enjoy all the writing of excellence and variety here (this was Island’s motto in 1979 and remains so to this day). And as you read, why not indulge yourself in a celebratory libation to mark our thirtieth birthday? Now that’s the kind of multitasking you can really embrace.
