EDITORIAL
GINA MERCER
David Owen, in his ‘last’ editorial, wished the new editor ‘all the very best’. At that stage the new editor had not been appointed. Now she has, and I am it. After only a week or two in the position, it is clear that Island has been in very competent hands for the past six years. David is leaving it in great shape and I will do my best to build on his stewardship. A large vote of thanks to David and all the best to him in his new position as Director of the exciting venture, Quintus Publishing, associated with the University of Tasmania.
This issue, in spite of David’s optimistic sign-off in Issue 103, is largely his work due to the timing of my appointment. He has selected a number of interesting essays from the 2005 Watermark Literary Muster, ranging from meditations on birds and bird-watchers to explorations of the relative merits and demerits of free verse in the hands of environmentalist poets.
James Charlton, Island's poetry editor, once again presents a selection of fine poems, my favourite being Kate Llewellyn’s ‘Holiday’ which compares the apparently purposeless scratching of hens with the apparent indolence of a writer. Both animals end the day with viable products, in ways mysterious to the utilitarian, clock-ruled observer. I imagine many a writer pasting this poem above the bathroom sink to remind their impatient family of the enigmatic nature of creative effort. I know I’m tempted.
As you might guess from this, I am a poet. I have also published a novel and two nonfiction books. For nearly twenty years I worked in academia, teaching literature and creative writing (as well as editing a literary journal for years) before migrating to Tasmania in order to dedicate myself to writing. I’m working on the next issue (of course), an exploration of the many meanings of Antarctica to the people who visit, research and imagine that vast white continent. So far, the material looks fascinating. I hope you enjoy this rich issue and I look forward to preparing the next sensuous and intellectual feast for your enjoyment.
